iNTERVIEW OF aLOK sIR

Interview of Prof. ( Er. ) Alok Kumar

OUR Alok Sir
Friends , I am your average professor, still learning daily new thoughts, new technology, adventure, including also philosophy, life planning, gardening and making his own dream project " SHAKTISHALI " Youth - Brigade.
What classes do you teach? Do you have a favorite?
Alok Sir : For four years now I have been teaching Thermodynamics,Workshop Technology,Production Engineering, for freshman students majoring in the engineering। I also teach Industrial Management mainly for final year B।E। students. This year I am also teaching Nuclear Engineering for the first time, which is for students majoring in something other than science. I do not think I can say I have a favorite.
Each level of these classes satisfies a different part of me.
Do you have a specific lecture style?
Alok Sir :
I definitely have a certain lecture style. I emphasize conceptual understanding rather than mechanical memorization. To that end, I try to attract the type of students to join my classes who are willing to do the "Mechanical walk" in order to understand the mystery of our universe and feel the joy that results from such understanding and appreciation.
I encourage the students who join my classes to participate in a Socratic dialog. In a Socratic dialog, the "teacher" never answers the question directly. Instead of giving an answer to the student's question, the teacher replies with a question until the student sees the answer him/herself, until the answer comes from the teacher who lives within the student, until the student becomes the teacher him/herself. What are your research or other scientific interests? Alok Sir : During the last several years, my research has been more towards better methods of teaching and writing in science & technology and in general, how students can be more successful in maintaining sustainable happiness and real personal growth. To that end, with the help of one of my past students, Bhawani Shankar, there is now a website with a lot of material related to "Success in College and After College : How to Get and Stay on Course." In addition, I am starting to teach a freshman seminar with the above title every quarter. That seminar grow out of informal lectures I used to give every quarter on important topics. My other scientific interests are in green chemistry, energy & environment etc…...
How did you get interested in life planning?
Alok Sir :
That is a good question. I feel I could write a series of books on the subject. As always is the case, any one of us suddenly can become a living spring of water from his/her life experiences. In my case, I always liked teaching and learning. I knew that from my first college years. But life circumstances caused me to drift away to work in various other work environments related to chemistry. Being so thirsty for expression and the discovery of human nature, I could not take being away from an academic teaching environment anymore. The issue became an issue of life and death; it was so strong. So I suddenly started on the new path by choosing to leave a very high-paying permanent position to take several temporary very low-paying positions. I know it sounds crazy but it happened, and it had a great impact on all the members of my family. I was very lucky to have the full support of my family.
What advice would you give a student on how best to choose a good career?
Alok Sir : I would like to keep this answer short so anyone who reads this will always remember it. No pain, no gain. It is not without pain that we come to know who we are. By finding out who we are more every day, it is possible to "do" what we are. And by doing what we are, we are definitely home, gravitating effortlessly towards total success. Unfortunately, to have total success in life, inwardly and outwardly, a high GPA is not enough. To do what we love is very important but it still is not enough. Only if your personality type matches with what you are doing, where, how, when and with whom, then real success is within your reach. Therefore, I say to my students that if you want to be a success, know who you are.
Do you have any hobbies?
Alok Sir :
Yes, I have several hobbies. I love taking walks and spending time in nature. To that effect, I have gardens not only at my house but also at the our College provided by the Management. I encourage my students to get gardens so they can recalibrate themselves after studying and feel good about themselves. Some of them have responded. It is a great pleasure to meet them at the gardens and see them working with the soil and the plants. If you go to my personal website: http://eralokkumar.blogspot.com/ you will see several pictures of some of my hobbies.
I also started to take a class on how to develop yourself with new thoughts and now I am making it from all natural components। In order to encourage my students to have hobbies, I thought of the "Natural Soap Award," as I call it. For each class I teach, at the end, the student with the highest score gets a handy Gifts selecte by me. When they come to me to pick up their award, while I am carving the "life curve" on it, I have the opportunity to tell them face to face how important it is to know themselves. I consider it very important especially for the students with high GPAs to be balanced in life. After all, most of them will end up in leadership positions and many people will be affected by their decisions. We must prepare these students the best way we can. I stress the fact that doing their work right would not be enough without considering the well being of others and our environment.
Who is your favorite scientist?
Alok Sir : Albert Einstein is my favorite scientist, not only because of his bringing truth to science but because of his excellent personality and life values that perhaps most people are not aware of. Another reason is because of the way he spoke about our favorite person, Gandhi. "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood," -Albert Einstein, in regard to Mohandas Gandhi.
Do you have a favorite quote?
Alok Sir :

"You Must Be The Change You Wish To See In The World," -Mohandas Gandhi.

SAFEGUARD YOUR INTERESTS AS A CONSUMER WHILE SEEKING ADMISSIONS IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

The Demand for professional education has risen steeply in the last few years. This cannot be met fully by state-funded or state-aided institutions alone. This is why a new category of private, self-financing institutions have registered a phenomenal growth. They offer courses in engineering and technology, computer, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, management, teacher education and law, for which there is great demand. Many of these institutions are deficient in matters like infrastructure, competent faculty and even a congenial campus environment. Hence there arises a need for both students and their parents to be aware of their rights and undertake comprehensive assessment of the infrastructure facilities and validity of the courses before committing their hard-earned money to such institutes.

Crucial Role of Regulatory bodies

Education, including university education is in the State list of the Constitution. However, the Centre is entrusted with the responsibility of coordinated development and maintenance of prescribed standards of education. Accordingly, the University Grants Commission was set up in 1956 followed by the establishment of a number of regulatory bodies called Councils in the field of professional education through parliamentary enactments. While in the pre-independence days there was only one such Council - the Medical Council of India established in 1933 - three are now more than dozen.

Besides the Councils, there are three other statutorily constituted regulatory bodies, viz., the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI). They are responsible for regulating the standards of education and profession in their respective areas. Unlike the Councils, they themselves conduct the examinations and admit the qualified students as Associate Members as professionals.

The most widely known regulatory Council is the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), because of the large number of professional and technical disciplines it controls.

A medical student must qualify from a medical college recognised by the Medical Council of India and after fulfilling the specified conditions (e.g., internship in hospitals) becomes eligible for registration with the State level Medical Council to undertake practice legally. In professions, where no such registration is necessary, students qualifying from recognised institutions only are eligible for employment or can pursue further education. For example, the National Council for Teacher Education, which regulates education, has issued a sort of ‘statutory warning’ that “qualification in teacher education obtained pursuant to courses offered by unrecognised institutions will not be treated as a valid qualification for purposes of employment under Central/State government institutions, universities, colleges, schools or other educational bodies aided by Central/State Governments”.

It is therefore, essential that students must first ascertain whether the institutions in which they are seeking admission are recognised by the concerned regulatory authority.

The AICTE which has a comparatively larger number of institutions under its umbrella, publish several directories, each dealing with a group of courses. National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) have established their own websites. Lists of recognised institutions and courses are available from these sites.

Consumer Protection Act – Boon for the students

The issue of recognition of professional educational institutions and course by the concerned regulatory authorities become the subject of dispute under the Consumer Protection Act (1986) had led to far reaching verdict awarded by the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. The apex consumer court has resolved the basic question whether educational institutions come under the ambit of consumer courts and held that they too are liable for deficient services rendered. The verdict was in response to complaint field by 12 students, who joined the Buddhist Mission Dental College in Bihar. The College in its admission advertisements for the BDS Course, gave an impression that it is affiliated to Magadh University and recognized by the Dental Council of India. After joining the College the students to their dismay found that it was neither affiliated to Magadh University nor it is recognized by the Council. As a result, they not only lost two academic years but also the money spent on fees, hostel charges, etc. Holding the service rendered by the College to be deficient, the Commission directed it to refund all admission expenses with interest and pay compensation for the loss of two years and, also the cost of the petition.

Apart from the redressal of the grievances of students, the importance of the award lies in the fact, that it brought educational institution under the ambit of the Consumer Protection Act. The Commission observed, "Imparting of education by an educational institution for consideration falls within the ambit of 'service' as defined in the Consumer Protection Act. Fees are paid for service to be rendered by way of imparting education by the educational institutions. If there is no rendering of service, the question of payment of fee world not arise. The complaints (the student in this case) had hired the service of the respondents (the College) for consideration and so they are consumers as defined in Consumer Protection Act".

Educational institutions that collect fee are thus service providers and Students and their parents who are paying for these services can seek compensation for such deficiencies.

What Constitutes deficiency of services

Some of the instances that can be considered as deficiency of services are listed below :-

i. Running Un-recognised schools and colleges

ii. Employing under qualified and untrained teachers.

iii. Inadequate infrastructure facilities like library, laboratory, accommoda-tions, furniture, playground

iv. Adopting of syllabi which is not prescribed or standard syllabi

v. Issuing of misleading advertisements promising placements/practical training

vi. Delay in providing provisional certificates, resulting in denying admission to the students during the academic year in to the next higher course.

vii. In case the management runs an unrecognised educational institute due to which students become ineligible to appear in the examination having studied for the whole year or even a few months the institution can be held responsible.

viii. Promise of placements in India and abroad that are not fulfilled can also make such institutions liable for compensation. Such a promise of guaranteed placement which is not fulfilled later on is a clear case of unfair trade practice and such managements are liable to sue for the loss sustained by the students.

ix. Inadequate computer lab

x. Lack of adequate space and facilities to undertake projects as required under the course curriculum

xi. Laboratory facilities being inadequate with requisite books often not available

xii. Frequent shuffling of classes

xiii. Hostel facility not in close proximity of the campus

xiv. High student-faculty ratio that is detrimental to students’ interest.

xv. Non-supply of hall tickets for examination which may result in loss of one year.

xvi. When promised practical training is not given even though the course is completed.

xvii. A student though present in the examination hall but is shown as being absent.

xviii. Failure of institutions to offer facilities that were promised at the time of collecting fees.

xix. Failure to provide hygienic food in residential school where boarding facilities are offered

xx. Suffering of students due negligent driving of the driver of private buses/transport employed by the institute

xxi. In respect of pre-nursery and play schools failure of the institutions to ensure suitable safety measures for children below 5 years especially with regard to fire, water, electricity

xxii. Non following of prescribed or standard syllabi

xxiii. Refusal to issue transfer certificate and conduct certificate when demanded by students or parents on account of poor services offered by the institute

xxiv. Refusal by the institute to refund the deposit amount when request for transfer certificate has been made by the student on account of genuine and unavoidable circumstances.

xxv. Collection of the entire fees for the whole year in advance and refusal to refund the part fees when a student wants to leave the institute mid-term on account of genuine unavoidable circumstances.

(The list given above is purely suggestive and indicative and the actual interpretation of what constitutes a “Deficiency in Service” shall have to be analysed and interpreted on a case by case basis)

Safeguards required to be adopted by parents :-

i. Take bills for all the payments made to the school or college.

ii. Keeping a copy of the prospectus handy during the entire tenure of the course.

iii. Ask for copies of certification of academic degrees offered by the institute

iv. Check the infrastructure facilities provided by the institute before finalising admissions

v. Examine the “minimum standards” in respect of infrastructural facilities as prescribed by AICTE, UGC, MCI etc.

Checking the validity of academic degrees – The most crucial aspect

Elaborate rules and procedures have been prescribed by Government for establishment of private education institutions. The validity and recognition status of degrees awarded by the institution becomes extremely important since getting a degree which is not recognised by the Government is not only a financial loss but results in a valuable loss of time and almost ruins the career of such students who may have taken admission to such institutions. Consumer Courts have taken very serious note of such institutions in which the brochures/prospectus/advertisements of the institutions claimed that the courses were recognised by AICT and UGC etc. but when the candidates who passed out from such institutes it was found that the degrees awarded to them were not recognised. Such instances not only de-stabilise the financial position of the parents but very importantly the students are devastated mentally and are at loss to decide about their future.

Parents and students must therefore check the validity of the degrees by logging on to the Website for All India Council for technical Education (AICTE) (www.aicte.ernet.in), University Grants Commission (www.ugc. ac.in), National Council of Teacher Education (www.ncte-in.org) and Medical Council of India (www.mciindia.org). The list is indicative.

Role of Educational Institutions

While the ultimate responsibility lies on the students and their parents, the educational institutions themselves can play a very important role in ensuring that the rights of students and parents as consumer of their services are not violated. It is the responsibility of these institutions to make available all the information in the form of brochures, prospectus and their respective website. If the prospectus gives all the terms and conditions associated with a course and provides all the relevant information about the status of the institute the validity of the course and also gives the relevant information about the source of recognition i.e. whether UGC or AICT, it should impart confidence in the minds of students. In case a prospectus/brochure contains very lofty promises without adequate background information of facts to support such promises the students and their parents should think twice about admissions to such institutes.

It would be in the fittest of things if education institutions play a positive role in spreading consumer awareness by a combination of activities such as seminars, workshops, literature, discussions, essay competitions, quizes etc.

Simultaneously, students and parents should behave as Smart Consumers and ensure they get the ‘services’ for which they have made the payment to the respective Educational Institutions.

Succeed with Time Management

  The goal of all education is to prepare individuals for success in life and moreover success is a journey, not a destination. Since the beginning of human history we have been living under certain universal laws that have operated our daily lives whether we are aware of them or not. One of such laws is the law of correspondence, which tells that your outer world is a mirror of the inner world. In simple words, your outer world corresponds to your inner world. What’s going on around you is a reflection of what’s going on inside you. One of the greatest responsibilities you have to yourself is to keep yourself thinking like a winner all day long. Certainly one will come across inevitable setbacks and disappointments of daily life and one wins upon the following situations if he/she thinks like a winner. True measure of your character is decided by your thought on what you want and what you do not want? We generally become upset, angry and lost control of ourselves when things go wrong. This is a natural tendency of most of the people, but people who have success in their life always have a winner’s attitude and mentality. They continue to think about wining and success even under the most difficult or adverse circumstances. Those who think about success and achievement all day long are basically the successful people. As per the law of the attraction, each human being is a living magnet, that we radiate thought energy and that we invariably attract into our lives the people and circumstances that harmonize with our dominate thoughts. When people think out positive and happy things, they automatically attract positive and happy people and circumstances into their lives and vice-versa. The choice is always up to you. One of the greatest key to positive thinking is the ability to look for good in every situation. Sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can. Time management is an essential success skill. Managing your time effectively will help you to;

l Be more productive

l Reduce your stress level

l Improve your self esteem

l Establish an important career skill

l Reach your goal

l Balance and successful life

What is success?

The meaning of success comes in many forms, and many definitions. It all depends on what you are searching for in life. Athletes may have one definition of success, and a stay at home mom may have another. A musician may see success as a number one hit, and a doctor may see success as a surgery that went well. It basically depends on the prospective of life you have. Let’s differentiate between accomplishment, success and true success.

Accomplishment

It is related to the task or action that you have attempted, and the desired results obtained. It is based on what was expected, and what results were done. People accomplish things all day long, but really achieve no success in those actions.

Success

Ongoing string of accomplishments when put together, add up to a major obtainment in life is known as success. It is an ongoing realization and obtainment of worthy results, concerning actions, life wealth, or a worthy deal. It is not just accomplishment, it is beyond that. It is basically measured by the number of achievements you make. But the route which you follow to reach your goals is what actually matters.

True success

True success is simply the realization and obtainment of a worthy ideal or result that your heart is deeply connected to it. It is what people die for it. It is a success that soaked with emotion, powered by passion, driven by destiny, and forged with the fire of the heart. That is why that, many athletes have long career. Basically their heart is attached to their success.

Success is based on what you have done with the opportunities you have been given. Success is not created in wealth or fame; it is created in the sincere attempt to reach a goal. It is destination that we must be continually striving to get to. When anyone accomplishes a goal, they have temporary success. You should set multiple smaller goals for yourself in order to reach the final desired destination. To remain successful, you must remain in motion because success never stays with you and it moves constantly. Success is a long hard road often includes many failures and trails before you reach the end.

Spend 10–15 minutes to create a one or two sentence phrase that will sum up your very own definition of success. As an example if my key success words were;

1. Freedom

2. Money

3. Peace

4. Flexibility

5. Time for time

6. Making for a difference

7. Leaving a legacy, etc.

Analyze the meaning of success from the phrase written against the words. This will indicate the next course of action to be drawn so as to reach the success point.

Success can be based under the following;

I. Target

II. Focus

III. Hard work

IV. Faith/believe

V. Dedication, and

VI. Prayer

If you want to be a teacher, that’s a target and it should be with you to be successful in life. You must focus on the things/requirements that qualify you to be a teacher. So you must focus in that area to attend those qualities for you to be successful in life. There is no short cut route to success, only it can be achieved through sheer hard work. The top of the ladder is never crowded, but only can be reached through the steps and it is the steps of hard works. You must believe in yourself, you must say to yourself down from your heart, that you can make it, that you can pass through the turns of been a teacher. You must be dedicated in what you have determined to do in life so as to attain success in life. Dedication is the spirit to duty. Prayer is the key to all success in life. It gives you the strength to be focused, to work hard and to be dedicated. If followed properly in our daily life and affairs, then sky is ours.

What is time management?

Practically speaking, time is constant; 60 seconds per minute, 60 minutes per hour, 24 hours per day and 7 days a week (24/7). It can neither be reversed nor forwarded, and moreover can not be stored. However, the usage of time differs among each individual. Some might give time the capacity to control their lives, and others find themselves a slave of time. Some might have no time at all to relax and create a stress-free life style. But one should not make time an enemy.

Time is one of the most important resources for everyone, and sometimes most valuable. In a few case timing is everything. A sense of time can motivate, focus efforts, and get more done per hour. Time is important due the following reasons;

l It is wisely said that if you value life, value what life is made of. Your time is your life, use it or enjoy it.

l Time is a major function of your career. Time plays an important role in your progress and prosperity, know how to use it and you can achieve much more quickly.

l Time is a major resource, because time itself is a raw material and knowledge of or a system of using it. If managed properly, will give rise to the optimum result as required.

There are several differences between time and other resources;

1. Time is obtained free of charge, just like the air we breath. Each morning 24 hours worth time is given to us.

2. One can never have more time than anyone else. But it is clear that some people achieve infinitely more than others in the same period.

3. Time can not be saved and used at a later date.

4. There no substitute for time in the way that there are substitutes for other resources.

5. Every activity, no matter how small or large, requires use of commodity called time.

6. You can make better use of your own time, others can not do so, and neither can they steal it from you.

Proper use of time is a problem for many people. An excellent solution to this is to get organized through time management. Some common misconceptions about time management are;

l Time management is common sense and does not require much effort.

l I work better under pressure, so time management will be counter productive.

l I do not have time for time management techniques.

l Time management is too serious and does not leave room for fun in life.

But the truth is time management is key to life and career success. Time management helps to learn more and exert greater control over your activities and life. Getting control of your time is the key to accomplishing what you want in life. Successful time management is important in all areas of life. If you can become the master of your time then you will reap the reward in both your professional and personal life. We are guilty of wasting time and putting things of till tomorrow, but the more you can effectively manage your time then the happier you will become.

Instead of controlling, suppressing, or constricting your freedom, time management enables you to achieve the things you really want and frees up time to enjoy life. Every one is allotted the same amount of time in life, that is, 24 hours in each day. You can save or steal time. You should learn how to invest it wisely. As one anonymous author said, “Time and tide wait for no one”. Remember to;

l Start with yourself and analyze how you waste valuable time.

l Decide to change poor working habits by replacing them with effective tasks.

l Set yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals and then develop strategies to reach these goals.

l Write to-do list with 80/20 rule in mind, do the most significant things first (80/20 rule is also known as Pareto rule. It is named after Vilfredo Pareto, Italian economist of 19th century. This rule states that 80 percent of all that happens at work is really the result of 20 percent effort. Most people spend 80 percent of their time trying to complete 20 percent of their tasks).

Time is your most valuable resource. Unless time is managed, nothing else can be managed. If time gets away from us, every other part of our life will get away from us, too. Time management is self management. Spend both time and money wisely so you will have plenty of each.

Some of the common time wasters

1. Problem

Feeling so over whelmed and anxious about your workload that you “freeze” put things off and does not get anything done.

Solution

1. Set priorities

2. Get started

2. Problem

Procrastination: Spending time on irrelevant tasks when you know you should be studying. Procrastination is the thief of time.

Solution

1. Dividing seemingly complex tasks into smaller parts.

2. Setting up a time scale and deadline for achieving each part of a task.

3. Dealing with unpleasant task first, so that they are out of the way.

4. Action plan and prioritize your activities and tasks on a weekly basis.

3. Problem

Putting off starting a task because, it feels so overwhelming or difficult that you can not face it.

Solution

Break up the work load into small chunks.

4. Problem

Daydreaming or “drifting off”

Solution

Check your energy level and concentration. Take a short break or a little exercise every hour.

5. Problem

Feeling that you can not begin because, you won’t be able to produce a perfect result.

Solution

Rather than aiming for a masterpiece each time, aim at reasonable results.

6. Problem

Poor planning

Solution

Planning is a way of saving time for errors. Mistakes usually happen because of unexpected and unforeseen factors such as a wrong estimate of resources or new problems. With the proper plan and preparation, these unforeseen circumstances can be minimized.

7. Problem

Interruptions - telephone.

Solution

Instead of being at the whim of callers, make the phone work for you.

8. Problem

Socializing, idle conversation

Solution

Effective conversation as per the situation demand should be adopted and followed.

9. Problem

Un-clear objectives and priorities

Solution

Set priorities as per the goal you want to achieve and the objective is to be clearly defined at the beginning of performing the task.

10. Problem

Stress

Solution

Some suitable method should be followed to reduce stress of any kind. Stress is highly objectionable during performing effective tasks and hence needs special care and attention.

11. Problem

Inability to say “No” Solution

Decide what you want to do and realistically can do and then say “no” to everything else. It is often accepted much more easily than you think.

12. Problem

E-mail and instant messenger interruptions

Solution

Reading and answering e-mails can consume a big portion of your day. Make sure you only allow a certain amount of time for checking the mail, and then ensure that you stick to that schedule.

13. Problem

Leaving tasks unfinished, jumping from one task to another

Solution

Complete the first task first and then move to the next task. Incase of urgency try to reschedule the time instead of jumping to the new task before the completion of first task.

14. Problem

Playing cards, games, watching television, etc. frequently

Solution

Perform the above activities only during the time slot allotted for them.

15. Problem

Lack of self-discipline, not carrying through plan

Solution

One should control himself as per set of rules and regulations either prepared by you or laid down by the system. Stick to the plan as far as possible unless some very urgent task comes into picture.

16. Problem

Constantly switching priorities

Solution

Follow strictly to the priorities prepared to achieve the goal.

Effective time management for achieving success

The main benefit of effective time management is that, it can drastically improve the quality of your life. Following are the hints to effective time management;

Ø Personal survey or analyze your present use of time

Ø Prepare an event calendar

Ø Prepare a chart of fixed commitment

Ø Schedule high priority activities for peak energy times

Ø Schedule most difficult activities for peak times and do them first

Ø Make weekly schedule

Ø Establish a regular study schedule

Ø Change study subjects frequently

Ø Take breaks

Ø Use odd hours for study

Ø Study with a partner

Ø Choose study area carefully

Ø List and prioritize daily goals

Ø Get enough sleep

Ø Make a daily check list

Ø Prepare a quarterly planning grid

Conclusion

The idea of the time management has been in existence for more than 100 years. It is an art itself. It is very easy to understand but difficult to follow. To effectively manage your time, you need to follow certain values and be disciplined in all activities. It is basically a process. Keeping track of how you spend your time is not time management. Time management is about making changes to the way you spend your time. The carpenter’s rule of “measure twice, cut once” equally holds good for every one of us to succeed in life. Plan your work. Take a few minutes to write out your goal and then list the steps to achieve them. Make sure to distinguish the goals that are truly important from those that may seem urgent but are really not important. If you have never managed your time before, it will take a little bit time to learn how and to do it. But just like anything else, the more you do it, the better you get. It is advised to stick with it for approximately 30 days so as to evaluate its effectiveness.

BUILDING A CAREER IN FREELANCE WRITING
-Dr. Satyanarayana Pattnaik, Satyabrata Mishra

A FREELANCER IS AN INDEPENDENT WRITER WHO EARNS LIVING BY CONTRACTING FOR WORK PROJECTS, WORKING FOR NO FIXED EMPLOYER, AND MAY WORK FOR A NUMBER OF EMPLOYERS AT ANY GIVEN TIME.
AS A FREELANCE WRITER, YOU NEED TO ASSESS YOUR SKILLS TO ENABLE YOU TO CHOOSE WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT. YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE SPECIAL

QUALIFICATION TO BE A FREELANCE WRITER

EDUCATION FOR FREELANCING:

A GOOD OPTION IS TO TAKE A DISTANCE-LEARNING COURSE AND YOU WILL FIND SEVERAL IN THIS CATEGORY. THESE GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY AT HOME AT YOUR OWN PACE. NOTABLE AMONG THEM ARE THOSE OFFERED BY INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY AND MANY OTHER INDIAN AND FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES OFFERING DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN CREATIVE WRITING AND JOURNALISM. MANY AREAS OF WRITING ARE COVERED UNDER THE COURSE AND IT IS ADVISABLE THAT YOU ENROLL IN ONE OF THESE COURSES TO SHARPEN YOUR TALENTS AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT GO WITH STUDYING THEM.
FREELANCE WRITING FOR NEWS-PAPERS
NEWSPAPERS REQUIRE NEWS CONTENT EVERY DAY OR EVERY WEEK. ALMOST ALL NEWSPAPERS ACCEPT FREELANCE CONTRIBUTIONS, AND USE FREELANCE WRITERS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY, MORE THAN ANY OTHER, IS BUILT AROUND CONTACTS.
REMEMBER THAT NEWSPAPERS WORK TO TIGHT DEADLINES, AND HAVE AN ONGOING REQUIREMENT FOR EDITORIAL POSITION. REMEMBER, TOO, THAT THEIR FAVOURITE FREELANCERS AREN'T THE ONES WHO WRITE THE MOST TECHNICALLY PERFECT COPY, BUT THE ONES WHO FILE ON TIME, ON TOPIC, AND WITHIN THE WORD LIMIT. NEWSPAPERS PLACE A HIGHER IMPORTANCE ON ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY THAN THEY DO ON STYLE AND FLAIR.
ORGANIZING YOURSELF
AS YOU CARRY ON WITH YOUR WRITING, YOU NEED TO ORGANIZE YOURSELF TO SUCCESSFULLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES AS THEY COME ALONG AND TO ENSURE THAT YOU DO NOT FAIL TO BEAT DEADLINES. PREPARE AND FOLLOW A WORK PLAN TO ENABLE YOU SUCCEED IN RESEARCHING AND WRITING ARTICLES. DEAL WITH ONE ASSIGNMENT FIRST BEFORE YOU GO TO THE NEXT. DEDICATE AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE TO WRITING SINCE THIS IS THE CORE FUNCTION OF YOUR CAREER. IF YOU WRITE LESS, THEN THE LESS YOU WILL EARN AND THE LESS MOTIVATED YOU WILL BE TO CONTINUE WITH WRITING.
YOU ALSO NEED TO SPEND MUCH TIME QUERYING ON MULTIPLE ARTICLE IDEAS. THIS IS IMPORTANT SINCE YOU WILL BE LOOKING FOR FUTURE SALES. THOUGH SPECIALIZING ON ONE GENRE IS GOOD, YOU SHOULD OCCASIONALLY LOOK FOR OTHER BRANCHES OF WRITING AND MARKETS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR CHANCES OF MAKING SALES AND EARNINGS.
YOU CAN BUILD A CAREER OUT OF WRITING AND EARN YOURSELF EXTRA INCOME PART-TIME OR REGULAR INCOME FULL-TIME FROM FREELANCE WRITING. HOWEVER YOU NEED TO STUDY THE ART OF WRITING, ORGANIZE YOURSELF AND CONSTANTLY SEARCH FOR MARKETS TO STAY AFLOAT.
MARKETING YOUR WORK
THERE ARE SEVERAL APPROACHES TO SELLING YOUR ARTICLE. EACH HAS ITS OWN ADVANTAGES AND YOU CAN GET VALUE FOR WHAT YOU WORK FOR EVEN IF AFTER A LONG-TIME.
CHECK PUBLICATION DIRECTORIES, ON THE INTERNET FOR ADDRESSES OF EDITORS RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCEPTING FREELANCE WRITERS' WORK, AND THEN WRITE TO THEM ADDRESSING THEM BY THEIR NAMES AND TITLES. IF YOU HAVE A GOOD RESUME ATTACH IT OR MENTION BRIEFLY RELEVANT CONTENTS WHICH MAKES YOU STAND OUT AS THE MOST SUITABLE TO WRITE THE ARTICLE.
EDITORS PREFER EXPERIENCED WRITERS TO NOVICES AND IF YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES THEN SAY SO. OTHERWISE, IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER AVOID SAYING SO BUT INCLUDE A FEW SAMPLES TAILORED TO THE PUBLICATIONS READERS TASTE.
IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO SEND YOUR ARTICLE TO MORE THAN ONE PUBLICATION YOU NEED TO GIVE A DIFFERENT SPIN AND CHANGE THE WORDING TO SUIT DIFFERENT PUBLICATIONS. TAKE WORK ACCORDING TO YOUR ABILITY AND CAPACITY. THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE TO MARKETING YOUR WORK IS TO WRITE ARTICLES FOR MASS AUDIENCES IMAGINING THEIR NEEDS AND TASTES AND SUBMITTING TO VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS. YOU TARGET SEVERAL PUBLICATIONS IN ONE CATEGORY WHICH YOU FEEL WILL BE MOST SUITABLE TO ACCEPT THE THEME OF YOUR ARTICLE. YOU MAY ALSO COPY YOUR ARTICLE FROM YOUR DISK OR COMPUTER AND PASTE ON VIRTUAL PUBLISHING COMMUNITIES WEBSITES OR E-MAIL YOUR ARTICLE TO VARIOUS EDITORS. THIS IS A QUICK AND CHEAP WAY OF MAKING MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS OF YOUR ARTICLES.
DEALING WITH REJECTIONS
ALL IN ALL WE HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT REJECTIONS ARE A FACT OF LIFE AND WE WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THEM, BUT YOU WILL BE A LOT WISER, IF YOU STUDY THE REASONS FOR YOUR REJECTIONS TO ENABLE YOU IMPROVE YOUR FUTURE QUERIES AND SUBMISSIONS THUS INCREASING YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING ACCEPTANCES. WHILE SOME EDITORS MAY GIVE YOU SUGGESTIONS THEY WISH YOU TO CONSIDER BEFORE ACCEPTING YOUR ARTICLE AND SOME OTHERS ARE RETURN YOUR WRITE-UP WITH POLITE REJECTION.
READ WHAT THEY WRITE TO YOU AND LEARN FROM THEIR REASONS. CHOOSE POPULAR THEMES FOR ARTICLES AND ADD MORE VALUE IN THEM SUCH AS STATISTICS, PHOTOGRAPHS, EXPERT COMMENTS AND AN OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE ISSUES. WITH TIME AND PATIENCE YOU WILL UTIMATELY SUCCEED.

SCHOLASTIC  APTITUDE   EXAMINATIONS

The fact that the talent should be identified and nurtured from the vey beginning is the genesis of all talent search examinations. Be it global Olympiads or our very own National Talent Search (NTS) Exam of NCERT or Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) of DST. NTS exam of NCERT is targeted at high school students. It is conducted at two levels class VIII as well as class X. NTS is a two stage test. The first stage is conducted at provincial level and the final stage is conducted at national level. NTS exam consists of two papers namely the mental ability test and scholastic aptitude test. Thousand scholarships tenable up to post graduation or research level are awarded every year in each category. Olympiads target senior secondary students of science streams. KVPY is aimed at senior secondary students as well as professional graduates having research aptitude. Students having proficiency in basic sciences at senior secondary level can sit for prestigious exams like National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP), National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC), National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB) and National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA). Initially these exams were unrelated to any admissions, scholarships or jobs. They were designed to enable students and institutions to measure themselves against a national standard. To make them more attractive, they are now linked with admissions and scholarships. NSEs now lead to National, Asian and International Olympiad Examinations. The Olympiad program is overseen by a National Steering Committee set up by the Board of Research in Nuclear Science of the Department of Atomic Energy. These exams are conducted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) under the aegis of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (www.hbcse. tifr.res.in), a division of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). India started participating in International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) since 1998. NSEs are conducted in November and last date for registration is September 15 (www.iapt.org.in). Indian National Olympiad is conducted in last week of January or first week of February. The National Standard Examination in Physics (at XII standard level) identifies about 250-300 meritorious students across the nation. These students appear for Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) tests at about a dozen centres in different parts of the country. About 35 students are selected to receive NSEP-INPhO gold medals and they undergo three week long training at HBCSE, Mumbai in May/June. The top five students among them are identified to receive merit awards at the end of the training camp and to represent India in the International Physics Olympiad held in July every year.

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) has been conducted since 1968. India started participating in this event from the year 1999. Although India is a late entrant in this event, it hosted the 33rd IChO. The pattern of selection of Indian participant to IChO is similar to the pattern of selection of IPhO. NSEC is conducted along with NSEP, NSEB & NSEA throughout India to shortlist candidates for INChO. On the basis of their performance in INChO exceptional students are picked out for Orientation cum Selection camp of IChO.

Just like IPhO and IChO, International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is also a three-tiered competition that brings together the worlds best. In July 2000, India participated for the first time in the 11th IBO. Since then India regularly sends a four member team to IBO.

The Indian Astronomy Olympiad Program is designed to encourage students with good foundations in Physics and Mathematics and an interest in Astronomy to pursue further studies in this field. India started participating in International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) since 1999. This program is conducted in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museums. The program is funded by Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space. From 2005, IAPT offered its wide net work for the conduct of the first stage exam. There are two groups - juniors and seniors. For junior level the student should be in class X or below and for senior level the student should be in XI and for super senior level the students should not have appeared in XII exam. Super seniors write NSEA with seniors but become eligible for the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). NSEA is conducted on the same date and same venue along with NSEP, NSEC and NSEB. In fact NSEB and NSEA are conducted simultaneously. A candidate has to choose between NSEB and NSEA. A student can sit for any three of the subjects. The exam fee is only Rs 60.00 per subject. No fee is required to be submitted afterwards for second and third stages.

The Mathematics Olympiad is undertaken by National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy (www.nbhm.dae.gov.in) and run in collaboration with the HBCSE. Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO) is held in each region normally between September and first Sunday of December each year. All high school students up to class XII are eligible to appear for RMO. On the basis of performance in RMO students are selected for Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO). INMO is held on first Sunday of February each year at various centres in different regions. The top 30-35 performers in INMO receive a certificate of merit. The INMO certificate awardees are invited to a month long training camp in May-June, each year. The final team consisting of five exceptionally gifted students represents India at IMO held in July every year. India has been participating in IMO since 1989. The international travel of Olympiad participants are sponsored by MHRD.

The Olympiad program strives to maintain international standards and the selection process is rigorous. Olympiad exams train the students to tackle any entrance exam for professional courses. If one observes the bio-data of IIT or AIIMS toppers one finds that they have participated in talent search exams at one stage or the other. A success in Olympiad ensures a bright career in basic science education and research from prestigious institutes and subsequent absorption as scientists in reputed national laboratories and scientific organizations. In particular, admissions to recently established NISER, Bhubaneshwar UM DAE CBS, Mumbai and IISERs Kolkata, Mohali and Pune centres are based on the performance of Indian National Olympiad Examinations. The intake capacity of all of these institutes is 100 (20 each for physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany and zoology). These institutes cater a five year integrated Master of Science degree in respective subjects. Students admitted to these institutes get a stipend of Rs. 3000 per month along with a suitable annual book grant.

Green Olympiad has been initiated for high school students in India since 1999. They are first environment Olympiad for schools. This year green Olympiad will be conducted on 27 September. Last date of registration is August 14. Students can register online or can download form from http:/www.teriin.org/olympiad. The theme of this year’s green Olympiad is ‘Our Environment and Climate Change’. Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) sponsors this Olympiad and the nodal agency for exam is The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Students of class 8, 9 and 10 are eligible. All participants receive special merit certificates from MOEF. There is cash prize for winners. Participating schools will be supported in implementing environment projects. Moreover Green Olympiads culminates in TERRAQUIZ, a 13 episode quiz program for television. The winning team is crowned as ‘Green Ambassadors’.

Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojna (Young Scientist Promotional Scheme, KVPY) is a program started by Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 1999 to encourage students of basic science, engineering and medicine to take up research careers in these areas. A generous scholarship is provided up to the pre- Ph. D. level to the selected students. This program is administered by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

To improve physics education at graduation level, National Graduate Examination in Physics was initiated in 1988 by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (bptyagi@rediffmail.com). Presently five to six thousand students enroll for NGPE. Top 10 % students of each centre are awarded certificates. Top 1% of successful students at national level is awarded merit certificates, book prize and also gets a chance of attending training and summer schools at prestigious R & D institutes in India. Top five students get gold medals. In particular they become eligible for National Initiative in Undergraduate Science program of HBCSE and post B.Sc. integrated Ph.D. program of Satyndra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. NGPE is conducted on last Sunday of January every year. Registration is around November 15 and registration fee is only Rs. 60. Mathematics Training and Talent Search Program has been initiated to expose bright students to the excitement of doing mathematics and to inculcate mathematical thinking. The scheme is open to graduate students of science and engineering stream having mathematics as one subject. Fifteen such trainings have been conducted so far. It has been observed that students of big cities and metros take part in such exams and get benefited. The students of far flung, remote and relatively less developed region are left behind. It seems that the stake holders of education in those regions are themselves unaware about these talent search exams and their long term benefits so they are not able to motivate their students to participate.

sir/mam i have completed b-tech in electronics in Electronics & Instrumentation. i want to do a course to enhance my skill and to get more opportrunity to get good job. so i want to know which course will be suitable for me. whether a course in Automation(PLC n SCADA) or a course in embedded sytem. which of the two courses have more demand and more job oppotunity.the instution which conducted these courses. (Naved Jamal)
You should be able to assess which of these areas of work suit you more. You could then discuss recruitment possibilities and job market prospects with recruitment agencies to get a clear picture of the employment prospects currently. Accordingly, you could survey training possibilities by following admission notifications in the local dailies. Unless the programme is offered with campus placement, doing any of these courses may not necessarily lead to employment. In general, a full time P G Diploma or MTech/ ME would be most likely to generate direct campus placement prospects, rather than a part-time /short-term course.

After B.Tech in I.T- which course will be better either M.TECH or MBA? kindly mentioned the Institute"s name
This is entirely a personal choice based on an assessment of your interests, abilities and career goals. There are many institutions offering MTech and MBA. MBA offers scope for diversification into non-technical careers, whereas, MTech is a decision to specialize in the field of technology and technical careers.
  By: Ms. Jayanti Ghosh
Are there any institutes which provide training & placement in industrial automation(PLC, HMI,Sensors)?
There are various such institutions, but they may not provide placement as well because short term or part-time courses do not have any such provision. You should keep track of the admission notifications of such courses and then research the institutions to assess what recruiters are associated with it, so that you know if there is any potential for recruitment. Your basic degree and your academic record would count for placement.

hello sir/madam..,i am deepthi completed my b.tech in (ECE) and i want to do part time m.tech without gate score.please send me websites of those colleges in hyderabad that doesn't require gate score.thanking u
Many institutions allow admission to M.Tech even without a valid GATE score under the following two categories : a) Such candidates who may have scored high grades in their B.Tech. b) Such candidates who have been sponsored by an industry/Institution etc. However, the criteria followed by each of the institutions may vary and you should go through the notification of each of the college to find out such institutions that may allow admission without a GATE score.

Along with your job in BPO, you may plan for a career in engineering by enrolling for a part time distance education course which are being run through a large number of institutes. List of such institutes can be seen under the Q-A segment of the Website of Employment News. Alternatively, since you already in BPO sector, you may also plan for a career in management by enrolling for BBA and then MBA. However, it is your own aptitude and choice that should help you in deciding the further course of action. You can still make up for the lost time by immediately enrolling for any higher qualification simultaneously pursuing the BPO job though you may also opt for a regular course in case you feel so.

respected sir iam in final year mechanical engg and got recenty placed.but iam confused about my pg courses.what are the scopes of mba and mtech which one will be better in respect of salary, lifestyle and oppurtunities. whether mba will be good if yes then after having job experience or not, or mtech will be good that too with or without experience.with mtech what is the chance of selecting industry sector or other non teaching posts is it required for promotion in jobs after btech or it can fech more salary. plz answer iam confused and i beg pardon i have done any mistake
Whether to go for MBA or M.tech after your Engineering degree is purely a personal decision that you have to take as per your aptitude and interests. Both the careers have a bright future ahead. A new emerging trend is also to acquire some job experience of 2-3 years and then go for MBA. Simultaneously, one may also pursue either MBA Or M.Tech by distance education also while doing the job.

what is tool designing ?and future scope in it? .after completion of it where we can give services? what isapportunities in govt. sector.also speacially in railways?
The development of new industrial tools and the planning of the material and equipment to be used to make them, as well as the steps to be followed is known as "tool design." Tool Designers apply their specialized knowledge of mechanics and structures to the design or modification of the dies, jigs, fixtures and gauges that are used in the material processing and assembly operations of industrial tool production. This work requires detailed knowledge of shop operations and the characteristics of the material from which tools are made. Designers must also be familiar with production and inspection procedures. The particular job duties and responsibilities of tool designers vary from firm to firm. In smaller establishments, the position is filled by highly skilled and experienced tool and die makers but usually, however, the position is filled by a mechanical engineer, who works with a staff of engineering technicians. Your level of qualification would determine the range and nature of employment opportunities in the government and elsewhere. There are opportunities both at the technician level as also engineering level. Prospects are good as manufacturing sector where they are usually employed is doing very well.

I have completed B.E. in biomedical engg. branch from SATI,vidisha(m.p.)[82.13%]. I want to know abt different careers, which i can opt in technical stream. also am i eligible for engineering services exam IN electronics and communication branch?
Biomedical engineers develop innovative biologics, processes, materials, devices and informatics to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases for patient's rehabilitation. Many of the biomedical engineers do research work along with professionals from life sciences, chemists, and medical scientists. The devices like artificial organs, prostheses (artificial devices to replace missing body parts), medical information systems, instrumentation, health management and care delivery systems, etc., are the contributions of the biomedical engineers. Thus, the engineers in this specialized field need to have a sound grounding in a basic engineering field like mechanical or electronics together with biomedical field. Here, the specialists are also concerned with developing imaging systems such as magnetic resonance, ultrasound and x- ray machines, and techniques and devices to automate insulin injections or control body functions. Biomedical engineers find employment with companies that manufacture equipment used in hospitals and diagnostic centers or centers for research and development, manufacturing, quality control and testing as also installation, maintenance or sales and marketing departments. They can also get jobs with large hospitals for selecting, handling and maintaining sophisticated equipments in addition to building customized devices for special needs or work in institutions involved in research. There are a few government agencies where you can get recruited for product testing, safety and establishment safety standards for devices. The notification regarding the Engg. Services exam was recently published in Emp. News. Please go through the same to find out about the eligibility conditions. The same can also be assessed at www.upsc.gov.in.

Iam a EEE Engg of 2004 passedout...iam working in power syatem protection field for 3 years..i would like to do my PG Diploma or degree in Power Systems..but i can't leave my job also in the same time...give me some idea
You could plan on completing a post graduate diploma related to power systems as offered by various universities in their distance education course including IGNOU ‘s(www.ignou.ac.in) Advanced Certificate in Power Distribution Management, or P G Diploma in Power Plant Instrumentation and Control at Annamalai University, Directorate of Distance Education, for example or try for a post graduate qualification through Institution of Engineers India (www.ieindia.org) or aim for a local engineering college which offers part-time M E/ M Tech.  I have completed my s.s.c.in 1998with 76%,12th standard in 2000 with 54%,B.tech with 57%.And now I am doing M.tech.so,what will i do next please give me suggestion because i have less marks is it eligible for companies?
If your academic record is not improving, then it would be advisable to focus on getting into the job market after your M Tech. Fortunately, with a post graduate qualification you may explore a variety of work opportunities related to your discipline including research, teaching and allied work. If your academic record limits your reach in big organizations or companies, it would be advisable to focus on smaller organizations in the early stages, build up your work experience and then move laterally into better and bigger organizations.

Iam completed my 3 year diploma in E&C now in do AMIE and completed section A.sir, kindly tell me the scope of Amie in jobs &what i do other thing by which my diploma is utilisd.
Once you have completed the Section B of AMIE, you shall be awarded the AMIE degree which is a recognized qualification as being equivalent to BE by all Govt./PSU’s/State Departments. Most of the private companies also give due weightage to AMIE qualification. But the degree of AMIE shall be most effective if you able to simultaneously pursue a job on the basis of Your Diploma qualification. After completing AMIE, you can appear for the Engg. Services Exam conducted by UPSC through which the Group A posts of the Engg. Departments are filled up. Few months back, Reliance has carried Vacancy notification for Engineers exclusively for AMIE degree holders recognizing the fact that most of AMIE degree holders bring with them a unique blend of experience and qualification.  : i am a final year student in BE(ece).what kind of jobs i can look forward .especially in telecommunication
It would be impractical to suggest what jobs would be offered but you can expect technical support and maintenance, customer services, and manufacturing, design and development jobs in telecommunications, data communications, network architecture, wireless, and optical networking. Your initial entry into the job market depends on your performance in the engineering programme and the campus placement available at the engineering college you graduate from.

What are the career prospects after doing M Tech in Laser technology from IIT KANPUR? ......(C G )
At the time of their invention in 1960, lasers were called "a solution looking for a problem". Since then, they have become ubiquitous, finding utility in thousands of highly varied applications in every section of modern society, including consumer electronics, information technology, science, medicine, industry, law enforcement and the military. All the scientific departments of the Government of India have identified laser and its applications as a thrust area and have funded projects at academic institutions and national laboratories. The laser-related activity in the Department of Atomic Energy got a fillip in 1987 when a new research institute called Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT) was established at Indore to carry out major R & D programmes in the areas of lasers and accelerators. Since its inception, CAT has made commendable progress in both the areas and is widely recognised as an important R & D centre of India. If you just want to know about the prospects from IIT Kanpur, it would be advisable to correspond directly with someone already doing the programme or direct a query to the suitable department at IIT Kanpur.

Sir kindly tell me about Psychometric Test in various competitive examinations for engineers such as in NTPC? ....(vikas kumar srivastava)
Psychometric testing usually falls into three main types: Ability testing, Aptitude testing and Personality questionnaires. An ability test such as the General Ability Test (GAT) is usually made up of four tests of specific ability - numerical ability; verbal ability; non-verbal ability and spatial ability. Aptitude tests tend to be job related while personality questionnaires aim to identify the enduring characteristics of the person that are significant for interpersonal behaviour. In the case of selection of engineering graduates for NTPC, the psychometric test, group discussion and interview are held only for candidates who have qualified the selection test which has testing of subject knowledge and Executive Aptitude. For the Psychometric test, you only have to give an objective response to help the recruiter identify your personality traits relevant for the organisation. You are not expected to prepare any model answers for such tests.

I am completing B.E (Electronices and Communication)should i go for M.B.A right now or first have some job experience and than go for M.B.A.Plz advice.....(HEENA SHEEL)
If you work for a few years after BE, you can find out about career prospects and nature of work in engineering careers and formulate your goals for the future. The work experience after your graduation would also add weightage to your application for MBA. However, if you are not interested in working as an engineer, then you could directly apply for an MBA but would not get the weightage for work experience. Hence, you would need to perform really well in the management entrance test to get calls for group discussion and interviews for admission in prominent business schools.

I just completed my B.Tech(ECE) this year. Sir I want to go in VLSI Design field can you please tell me about VLSI scope in India (About the VLSI Companies in India (small & big scale Companies)).For Big scale companies I am unablllllle to full fill the criteria as they have throughout 65% or 70% till B.Tech .As I have 66.1% in 10th ,56% in 12th ,60.2% in B.Tech. Please include my mail. Please if it then mail me.
There is good scope for VLSI professionals in India. You can locate suitable companies through an Internet search or by contacting recruitment agencies. As your prior academic record could be a stumbling block for joining prominent organizations, scale down your aspirations. Try to get into a reputed institution for VLSI course, then take the available job options, work for a few years, gain in experience and then look for movement to bigger and better organizations.

SIR, I,PRASHANT BIRJE would like to know the "CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MERCHANT NAVY". I am in my final semester of "B.E. IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING". I would be completing my graduation by JUNE 1 2007. My D.O.B. IS 19 OCTOBER 1984. ALSO PLEASE SUGGEST ME SOME OF THE GOOD TRAINING INSTITUTES IN INDIA WHERE I COULD GET A PLACEMENT ASSURANCE. Also please tell me the type of lifestyle in it and the pay and perks which I would receive?...(PRASHANT BALKRISHNA BIRJE)
The minimum eligibility for courses in Nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would grind to a halt. The starting salary varies between Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 a month. A person gets a variety of benefits such as free food, accommodation, paid leave, two-way free passage and facilities for families. In other words, the salary can be saved totally while one is on ship. The perquisites include bonus, holiday travel and other annual benefits. Foreign companies pay higher, and a starting salary of $ 1,500 to $ 3,500 can be expected.

Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India, takes care of the training needs and conducts competency exam through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). 'Certificates of Competency' awarded by the DGS, is needed for promotion to the various respective classes.

I am an Electronics engineer pased out in 2004.I had been doing private job since sept 2005,but I was not earning too much.In sept. 2005,there was a vaccancy in BSNL for 3000 JTO POSTS. I started to prepare for these exams for my better career. The exam was in jan 2006 & it was a pretty tough one. But still though I fared well than oter students with whom i discussed later on.I am a general category student & my centre was in J&K.I WANT TO KNOW THE MINIMUM PASSING MARKS INTO EXAM FOR GENERAL CATEGORY?
Knowledge of the passing mark will not help in any way because the decision of the board is final. You have to move forward with the acceptance that you did not make it.
Comparing your performance with the opinion of others does not in any way confirm that you did well. Try for more such openings. If you have been doing your job well, you should be able to move to better paying private jobs too. In the 21st century job scenario, do not waste time on what is past, stop worrying about the future and live in the
present. That will help you to focus better on your goals.

What are the career prospects after doing M Tech in Laser technology from IIT KANPUR?

I am a student of mechanical engineering. I am thinking of opting for IAS exams. I would like to make an informed choice in selecting the right subject for my Optional paper.

In terms of professional/technical courses the order of preference for Optional subjects is Law, Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering followed by Medical Science and Management. However, even though Law is the most popular, it’s had the lowest success rate while Medical Science. The recent trends indicate that the ten most sought after Optionals are History, Public Administration, Geography, Anthropology, Mathematics, Hindi Literature, Sociology, Philosophy, Physics and finally Political Science and Administration. Another interesting trend is that except for Hindi Literature, candidates have rejected all other languages.

But this is only a trend and you should not base your choice of Optionals on the basis of a trend or on what subject the topper opted for in the previous year. Incidentally, Commerce has now become Commerce & Accountancy and Political Science has become Political Science & International Relations. The newer subjects that have been included in the list of Optionals are Anthropology and Management.

GATE EXAM – HOW TO PREPARE
Many students may not be aware that there are several institutions in this country, offering specialized postgraduate progra-mmes in various disciplines. Attractive scholarship/Assistant-ship for postgraduate courses in engineering/Technology/Archi-tecture/Pharmacyat Engineering colleges/institutes in the country are available to those who qualify through GATE. Some Engineering colleges/institutes specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission to post graduate programmes. The candidate is required to find the procedure of final selection and award of scholarship/ Assistant-ship from the respective Institution to which the candidate seeks admission. GATE qualified candidates in Engineering subjects) will also be eligible for the award of junior research fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

What is GATE ?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Objective

The objective of ATE is identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post Graduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level, to serve as benchmark for normali-sation of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.

Why should we take GATE

1. M.Tech degree leads to specialization and furthering of interest in a certain area which may lead to Ph.D

M.Tech degree is best for those wishing to apply for Faculty/Research positions in educational Institutes/R&D centers.

Examination Details

1. The examination is a single paper of 3 hours duration and generally consists of Section A (Objective Type) which is of 75 marks and Section B (Problem Type) which is of 75 marks. Total: 150 marks.

2. You have to opt for your subject and study as per the syllabus mentioned in the GATE brochure.

3. The subjects of our interest are Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering., Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. Other subjects are also available such as Mathematics, Physics, etc.

4. Results of qualified candidates in GATE will give All India Rank and indicate percentile score. For example, a percentile score of 99 means you are in the top 1% category of the candidates who appeared for GATE.

5. Candidates who get less than 70 percentile get no score card.

6. GATE scores are valid for 2 years. You may reappear in the GATE exam if you are not satisfied with the earlier score and the new score (if better than the old one) will be used for admission purposes.

After the Exam, what next

1. After publication of GATE results, students must apply to individual Institutes to get their application forms.

2. Institutes advertise M.Tech admissions in leading news-papers from 1st April till end July. However some Institutes do not advertise and therefore students have to get the forms themselves.

3. In the application forms, you have to mention your GATE score alongwith other details.

4. The concerned Institute may conduct written test and/or interview for the purpose of admission.

5. Thumb rules: If your Gate score in Computer Science is 96 percentile or more then you can try for IITs, if between 85 - 96 percentile, then apply for top RECs, JADAVPUR, SHIBPUR, ROORKEE, etc. If less than 85, you have to look for appropriate institutes.

 CAREER GUIDE

TRENDS IN CAD/CAM AND OPPORTUNITIES

Introduction
An Engineer job is to provide a complete solution in his area of work by Using optimum Men, Material, Machine, and Money for the comfortable and reliable products to the human society. Faster change of product design for the comforts of the human kind, Leeds to often bottle neck situation to engineers particularly to face the competition, delivery, and quality. In recent years it is so happened that the product Conception and the Retirement become shorter, so any product gets absolute with in the shorter period of time. The industries expected to delivers the products with latest version in shorter time to sustain in the competitive market. The Design and Manufacturing process changes radically to meet more small quantity of more customized product to give feeling of customer’s special attention. Hence yesterday comforts become today’s basic need. Days are gone out just casually “Throwing the Product design” for the manufacturing and then for the society use.
CAD/CAM - A Look
Recent days more and more companies wanted their technicians and engineers, ready to fit in any work force though they are fresher. So it is becoming great challenges to get the suitable trained manpower in CAD/CAM and allied fields. Many fresh graduates fall in the trap of fake training centers who through false promises. Due to lack of up gradation of our university syllabus system in the subjects like Advance Production Technology, CAD/CAM etc with respect to today’s practical approach, puts a large gap between university and industries in most emerging areas. To address this gap government of India investing huge quantity of money in its establishments in tie-up with many countries/Agencies by bilateral agreements, to supply qualitative trained man power. Adequate measures are taking places through the need based training program by the Government Industry-Institute guiding the industrial society based on imposed challenges in the area of design and manufacturing.
Engineering Design:
General engineering design is divided into two categories, aesthetic design and functional design. In 2d work flow both design have problem to reach the objective. Also it becomes difficult to find the track of error. It is necessary to use Modern CAD system to eliminate all possible error that seeks last minute changes. The first creative stage of any design is to generate concepts. Many successes full company while going for new products, generates few concepts and then select the best by doing brain storming session. The engineers are expected to actively participate in the session to “freeze” the Design. Then the design is put in CAD system for feed backs with in the design development team.

1) Trends in CAD/CAM.

I) What is CAD?
Computer Aided Design is concerned to support the Design Engineering activity, that includes Creation of 2D/3D Geometric Models, Doing Engineering Analysis, Evaluating the Design by simulation and Produce Rapid Drafting for Manufacturing” with help of computer. The Traditional CAD System offers 2D Drafting, 3D modeling with Limited Modification Capability. This System substitute Drafting Board completely.

èTrends in CAD The high End 3D CAD Tool Provides many solution under one platform. It offers Feature Based –Parametric Modeling which understands the lump of the part as a future that allows the designer to modify the part in response to the analysis report or manufacturing process. If alteration made in one feature will automatically change other related (dependent) features. Dimensional and Geometrical Constrains Plays a major roll in this parametric design Tech. If Part Model changes the concern assembly and drafted drawing also changes. By FEA (Finite Element Analysis) we can optimize the designs by quickly simulating many concepts and scenarios before making a final decision, gives more time to think of new designs. Testing the designs on the computer instead of expensive and time-consuming field tests which leads to significant reduction in product development cycles (PDC), Cost and time-to-market is one the advantage. FEA divides the model into many small pieces of simple shapes called elements which shares the command point called nodes is the basic concept. The emergence of Air Craft Companies in India gives lots of opportunity those who know Class ‘A’ surface. These aesthetic/ free form surfaces are widely used in Automotive and Space capsules. Surface modeling plays important roll in manufacturing for 4 and 5 axis machining. CNC code changes automatically if CAD geometry modifies is one of the greatest advantages. Further CAD provides Versatile formats, Brilliant Presentation, Updated Export import facility with the other CAD formats. The modern CAD System Helps Product Design under practical constrains, Helps enormously Imaginative concept, Provides Optimality of design that are Value engineered for cost, Drawing produced form 3D confirms to updated ANSI, ISO Etc.

II) What is CAM?
CAM (computer aided manufacturing) is defined as “the effective use of computer technology in manufacturing planning and control”. Often there is confusion between the term manufacturing and production. Proving the component that is to be produced in large quantity is called manufacturing technology. That mainly includes planning the tools, fixtures, feed, and speed and also Selection of Materials, CNC machine, Program version and capable CAM systems, process planning etc. Once it is proved the component may allot for the production which produce in lots. This includes capacity planning, costing, Time management etc. A typical CAM includes a CAM system, CNC machine with compactable controller DNC link for feeding the program. The CAM job is to generate the program based on the geometric model. DNC job is to communicate the program to the Dummy terminal and to the CNC M/Cs which cuts the raw material to the finished part. The modern CAM system provides 5Axies facility to machine the most intricate parts at one setting. Some CAM system provides color coding for the extra part material that still to be machined.

III) What is CIM?
Computer Integrated Manufacturing is an integrated approach to maintain a Common Database for CAD, CAM and Business control. CIM includes all of the CAD/CAM, R&D, e-Publishing and also embrace the business functions of a manufacturing. CIM implements computer technology in all the operational and information processing activities related to manufacturing.

PLM is business strategy that helps companies share product data, applies common processes, and leverage corporate knowledge for the development of products from conception to retirement, across the extended enterprise PLM enables this entire network to operate as a single entity to conceptualise, design, build, and support products. Reverse Engineering The process of duplicating an existing part, component or product, without the aid o drawings, documentation, or computer model is known as Reverse Engineering. Reverse engineering involves acquiring 3D position data in the point cloud using laser scanners or by CMM’s Probe. A good surface is created from the point cloud using CAD System. Rapid Prototyping A family of unique fabrication processes developed to make engineering prototypes in minimum lead time based on a CAD model for testing purpose. 3D Printer is one of example which capture the CAD Model and print the by slicing the model in large quantity and prints it in the specific device attached to the CAD System. Virtual Manufacturing is nothing but manufacturing in the computer. The traditional design tools of manufacturing, CAD and CAM, can be significantly extended through VR. Using VR techniques, a complete "walk-through" of a design can be used to give an environment like feel.

Some of them are formal PG Programs and many of them are Job oriented short/long programs. Many of the institutions are conducting one month to one year industry specific program which assures the job with less difficulty. The SIDO Establishment programs are designed carefully by the Task force committee of National standard by the Experts based on the need analysis. Most institution does intensive Tracer study and keeps the data-base of the alumnus. These activities keep this institution close to the industries and make the programs most effective.
Many fresh Mechanical, Production Automobile even electronic & electrical engineers wrongly thinks IT is the only way out. So mostly they fall in the trap of only doing some programming course which they haven’t studied in their Engineering carrier. There are ample of opportunity for the Engineering solution like Product modeling, Kinematics simulation, Manufacturing, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computer based structural analysis, Piping design, Electrical Harness Installation, PCB design, Assembly Mountings etc. Fresh Engineers must identify potential institute for training in CAD/CAM.

All CAD/CAM programs suits to the fresh engineers of Diploma to Degree to Post graduation and even experienced professionals can also do CAD/CAM courses for skill up gradation or to change the carrier to CAD/CAM.

3) Opportunities
Liberation of economic made gate way for many countries to open their technological, Design and manufacturing center in India. Chennai is one of the brightest examples for this and become next to Detroit, a world head quarter for automobile sector. Many of our Industrial giants working on the projects of aerospace, railway and automotive sectors which give more lucrative rewards for CAD/CAM Engineers. The sensitive Indian labor market doesn’t affect the CAD/CAM related work force because our market place has become really global. Hence the CAD/CAM professionals having fare chance to work at their client place like Australia, Japan, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada etc due the project collaborations. A freshly and perfectly CAD/CAM trained Engineer gets salary as good as 10000INR to 20000INR and with two/three years experienced professionals gets salary as high as 35000 INR a unexplored true factor.

SELF EMPLOYMNET OPPORTUNITIES: PRIVATE INVESTIGATIORS
Self employed people make up a small percentage of the workforce, but their numbers continue to rise every year. Such people may not enjoy the guarantee of stable income, but they are usually tough, resilient and accept the responsibility of keeping up with the changing times. They have the added advantage of being able to change track when they spot new opportunities and thus pursue more lucrative profession. They create their own jobs, security and future and have the opportunity of doing the work that is personally satisfying. Self-employment or freelancing also offers flexibility of working part time or full time depending upon the time available.

In this series we try to uncover a rang of opportunities for self employment which disciplined and hard working individuals can explore in their search for a livelihood and career.

Private Investigators

A private investigator can conduct search and surveillance for determining activities, truthfulness and whereabouts of various subjects. The need for private investigators arises when someone wants the search and shadowing of subjects to be done discreetly without the public or the subject being aware of it. Private investigators normally work freelance for individuals It could be locating missing persons, records, or shadowing someone to find out about their activities, locations, contacts etc. There could be family related investigations for suitable marriage alliance or in the pursuit of grounds for divorce or a background check for business purposes. Investigation in to legal matters would require the gathering of documentary, testimonial and physical evidence in order to put together a sound and logical case.

Training

It is not essential to have a background I police work to setup as a private investigator. You also do not need any formal qualifications for this work. However, a good education can be helpful to progress to more important assignments. Specialised/ professional education can be put to good use while setting up as a private investigator. For example those who have training in accounting and insurance would find the background very useful for financial investigative work or to investigate losses and risks. They could be hired by businesses, companies and organizations to investigate or protect various financial matters. Law graduates are hired by legal firms/lawyers/detective agencies to help them prepare cases for court trials.

Investment/Facilities

A home office could be a starting point. Even if you wish to have a separate office, it has to be discreet and unassuming, so as not require much investment. However, telephone connection, a mobile phone, a personal computer and an Internet (eventually broadband) connection would be an important investment. For someone who cannot afford all this at one go, the starting point could be physical surveillance, search or research from public sources of information and gathering of physical or documentary evidence which involves more personal and physical effort rather than electronic search and investigation. With an investment of about Rs. 20000 one could be starting out with simple investigations in to social and family backgrounds and the graduate to more sophisticated investigations. At the high end, the investment could be approximately Rs. 1 Lakh or more, depending upon the level of sophistication of equipment and technologies to be used and services to be offered.

Publicity
There would be a need for private investigators especially in businesses and activities that are growing fast. Being well informed and well read are essential requirements for those who wish to continue to grow as private investigators.

SELF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Wanting to work from home is a choice you may exercise if you are self-motivated, disciplined, we’ll organized and realistic. Do something you love doing or you will not be able to sustain it. Do a lot of research before taking the plunge. Put together a business plan and research your market. All that king of stuff is really dull and boring but it makes you think seriously about what you are doing. If you still think self employment is a good idea, then you are probably right.
You have to look within yourself to find out in which direction up some related courses based on your abilities, talents, and interests but you have to look for work on your own.
Direct Selling
Direct selling is fast emerging as an important marketing tool. Opportunities for direct selling are in cosmetics and other personal care products, household goods, educational material, and financial products, to name but a few. Oriflamme, Tupperware, Avon Beauty, Direct Educational Technologies India Pvt. Hindustan Lever Network and Amway are just a few examples. Direct selling is the sale of a consumer product or service person-to-person, by independent sales people. Depending on the company, the salespeople may be called distributors representatives, consultants or various other titles. Products are sold primarily through in-home product demonstrations, parties and one-on-one Selling. It engenders considerable loyalty among its representatives and customers and gives you the opportunity to socialize and expand your network.
People of all ages and from all backgrounds can succeed in direct selling. It offers flexible work schedules and requires no specific levels of education, experience or financial resources. However, training in sales and marketing could be an advantage. Excellent networking and communication skills would be important to get the business moving. Usually, you receive training and support from an established company and the quality of the product ensures your credibility.
A presentable appearance and strong public relations skills, self assurance, good interpersonal skills are useful for interpersonal skills are useful for establishing yourself in direct selling. This concept of friendly selling works well with people who have a wide circle of friends and the sprit of enterprise.
You can decide where you wish to work. Since direct selling as an organized enterprise mainly for quality products, the type of people you meet and whom you approach for selling are above the average income group. Majority of the direct marketing takes place at parties, club meetings and other social gatherings. Hence, When you conduct promotional parties at your own base, at home, or a suitable location close-by, the arrangements have to be sophisticated to showcase quality products. Sometimes, direct selling would involve travel but the advantage is that it can be as per your convenience.
Some of the direct selling companies have a good business plan and regular training and support system. However, initial investment would be required. The best way to get into this would be to explore the companies offering direct selling opportunities and find out the facilities and investment involved. Then plan to take up the product or company that you feel most about selling and for which you have adequate finances.
The whole business is about creating public awareness so that your public purchases what you wish to sell. So your network of friends, relatives and more contacts through them has to be tapped. If you are generally a very sociable person, developing direct selling as your home based enterprise is ideal. Initially, you would sell the products to friends, relatives, colleagues and other acquaintances.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

— Prof. (Dr) P. K. Dutta
Professional Self-Employment Opportunities: Self-employed people work for themselves. They neither work as employees of any company nor do they receive regular salaries from an organization. They run their own business serving many different clients and customers. It may be a conscious decision to be self-employed or it could be forced upon you because you need to stay at home or because you are unemployed or have just been given the pink slip.
But you have to look within yourself to find out in which direction your talents lie. You can take up some related courses based on your abilities, talents and interests but you have to look for work on your own.
We will discuss various professional opportunities available. The focus would be on enterprises where working space is either your home or in which you move to deliver service at the client's doorstep.
Various Options Career / Job at SME: There are many types of occupations available now a days and during career planning due care has to be taken for selecting the right professional. Some examples are given below:
Production, Retailing, Medical Transcription, Multi-Media Application etc (Animation), Logistic, Hardware and Software support business commerce – management – Professional Training can be held as a Chartered Accountant, Financial Analysts, I.C.W.A., Marketing Export Management etc. They can work as consultant or have their own business and get employed in SMEs, Engineering & Computer Science – Various professional courses are available, degree and diploma courses, which help students to become professional and also as consultant and establish small-scale industry.
Para-Medical Science – After specialization one can work as independent consultant as physiotherapist, beauty therapist etc.
Other options – Fashion designer, dietician, advertising (media), employment in travel & tourism performing arts, crafts-manship etc.
Own Business – Direct selling, Construction, Real Estate, Renovation, Architectural and interior designing, insurance. Many more options are there depending on the persons inclination to venture into them.
In the era of globalisation, people are expected to be knowledge workers – entrepreneurs.
SMEs in India are the real drivers of the economy, Sample some facts – there are over 1.18 crore units of which manufacturing/assembling/processing units comprise two-thirds of the units. The SMEs generate a turnover of Rs 4 lakh crore, 88% of the SMEs are proprietary owned, and about 8% of them being women managed. SMEs witnessed an overall growth rate of 11.5% and employ over 2.82 crore people. SMEs account for 39.42% of industrial output and 34% of the country's total exports. In the US, Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, which account for nearly 75% of the World's GDP, SMEs account for nearly 50-75% of the GDP and exports in activities of the GDP and exports in activities such as manufacturing trading and services.
As India's economy integrates with markets globally, exciting opportunities have opened up for SMEs, from outsourcing to increasing access to hitherto protected markets.
Recognising SMEs' potential, the Government has initiated numerous programmes to nurture high growth, resilient SMEs. Simultaneously, SMEs have enhanced competitiveness, benchmarked against the best and taken full advantage of the Government's facilities and regional efforts in SAARC, ASEAN and APEC.
With this quantum growth across sectors, the perspective for SMEs has shifted from domestic markets to cross-border trade and emerging markets like the South East, Middle East and China.
Conclusion
Success in business, personal relationship and social interactions requires us to reinvent ourselves to meet the ever-increasing demands of an ever-changing new era. This is accomplished not by fighting change, but by embracing it. Our reaction to change is the most important thing for business managers as well as common people. To be successful, we have to cultivate a fundamental reaction to embrace change rather than fight it. Embracing change does not mean that we compromise our values of integrity, honesty and goodwill. In fact, these values are unchangeable and are the foundation stone for a harmonious and prosperous human society. As we embrace change, we must also look forward and consider taking actions for leading the change rather than passively wait for the change come to up.
Finally our motto should be – World is our Market, and my advice to all concerned is – Work and Win.
